Telangana and Maharashtra Tummidihatti Barrage dispute

Overview

Telangana and Maharashtra officials are engaged in discussions regarding the proposed Tummidihatti Barrage on the Pranahita River. A central point of contention is Telangana’s proposal to increase the barrage's Full Reservoir Level from 148 metres to 152 metres. Telangana officials argue this increase is necessary to meet drinking water and irrigation needs in northern Telangana and to enable gravity-based water conveyance to the Yellampalli project.

Following meetings between Telangana Chief Minister A. Revanth Reddy and Maharashtra Deputy Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis, Maharashtra has indicated a willingness to revisit the request for a higher barrage, provided technical, environmental, and administrative requirements are satisfied.

To facilitate negotiations, Telangana has expressed readiness to compensate farmers in Maharashtra for land affected by submergence and has offered to deposit funds into a joint account managed by both state governments. Telangana has also stated it will not object to Maharashtra conducting an independent survey of potential land submergence.
