Telephone fraud arrest in Saitama and Niigata

Overview

A 25-year-old unemployed man from Kawagoe, Saitama Prefecture, was arrested by police in Joetsu and Ojiya for his suspected role as a recruiter or director in a telephone fraud scheme.

Between October 18 and November 11, the suspect allegedly impersonated the son of an elderly woman in her 80s, claiming urgent cash was required for unpaid taxes. The victim was instructed to send a package containing 4 million yen in cash to an apartment in Maebashi, Gunma Prefecture, where an accomplice intercepted it. The suspect has denied involvement in the crime and had a prior arrest in August for a separate fraud case.
