Teradyne Robotics and JAKA patent dispute

Overview

Teradyne Robotics, the parent company of Universal Robots, has initiated patent infringement litigation against a German subsidiary of the Chinese robotics manufacturer JAKA. The legal action was filed through the Unified Patent Court (UPC) Local Division in Copenhagen.

The lawsuit alleges that JAKA has infringed upon multiple patents involving both hardware and software aspects of Universal Robots’ collaborative robots (cobots) marketed within the European Union. Teradyne executives noted that the decision to litigate followed an investigation where they acquired a JAKA robot to examine its similarities to their own force- and power-limited robot arms.

Jean-Pierre Hathout, President of Teradyne Robotics Group, stated the company is committed to enforcing its intellectual property rights against what it describes as ‘illegal and unfair copying’. This case represents the second major intellectual property dispute Teradyne Robotics has brought against a Chinese robotics firm in Europe during 2026.
