Terna Italy grid upgrades

In early July 2026 Terna started a four‑week project in the province of Pescara to dismantle about 10 km of the Marrucina‑Montesilvano overhead line and 28 supporting towers. The removal is part of a broader modernisation plan that will replace the line with new 150 kV underground cable links between several primary substations, improve safety and efficiency, and free roughly 40 hectares of land for other uses while recycling steel and conductors.

Later in July 2026 Terna began work on a new 220 kV transmission line in western Sicily, linking the Partinico sub‑station in Palermo province with the Fulgatore sub‑station in Trapani province. Spanning more than 50 km, the project includes a 1.5 km aerial segment to replace part of an existing line and aims to increase capacity, reduce voltage drops and congestion, and support greater integration of renewable generation. The Sicily line complements other strategic infrastructures such as the Tyrrhenian Link submarine cable and the Italy‑Tunisia interconnection.

Together these actions illustrate Terna’s ongoing rollout of infrastructure upgrades across Italy, targeting both the removal of ageing overhead assets and the construction of higher‑capacity transmission routes to meet growing demand and sustainability goals.
