Terrorism and IED activity in Punjab and Chandigarh

Overview

In late July 2026, Punjab Police conducted a joint operation in the Jalandhar district, resulting in the arrest of Satbir Singh. Authorities seized a 1.3 kg improvised explosive device (IED) containing shrapnel and ball bearings. Police linked the module to the banned Babbar Khalsa International (BKI) and Pakistan’s Inter-Services Intelligence (ISI), stating the device was intended for a “high-impact attack aimed at disturbing public peace.”

In mid-August 2026, Amritsar Rural Police intercepted a separate suspected terror plot targeting a police establishment. During a patrol on the night of August 15-16, an Assistant Sub-Inspector discovered a suspicious black package wrapped in wax near the Gaggomahal police post. The package contained a 690-gram IED equipped with an electronic detonator, a battery, a timer, and an iron box. A bomb disposal squad successfully defused and destroyed the material. Director General Gaurav Yadav and Senior Superintendent Kanwalpreet Singh Chahal confirmed the recovery prevented a potential threat to public safety.

On August 23, 2026, Chandigarh Police foiled another suspected plot near the Sector-43 Inter-State Bus Terminal (ISBT). Authorities recovered approximately 5 kg of gelatin stick explosives, a detonator, a remote-controlled system, a pistol, and live cartridges. One IED was reportedly concealed inside a tiffin box. Three suspects from the Tarn Taran and Amritsar districts were arrested. Officials stated the suspects were allegedly acting under instructions from a handler associated with BKI based abroad. Investigations are ongoing to identify the full network and the source of the explosives.
