Thailand international diplomacy and bilateral relations
Overview
Thai Prime Minister Anutin Charnvirakul has emphasized Thailand’s role in global cooperation and international law. During the 81st anniversary of the United Nations, the Prime Minister advocated for the UN Charter to maintain peace amidst geopolitical tensions, climate change, and advancements in artificial intelligence, positioning Thailand as a “bridge” for global cooperation. He cited Thailand's role in hosting the 2026 IMF–World Bank Group Annual Meetings in Bangkok as a concrete example of this commitment.
Following these international remarks, the Prime Minister conducted an official visit to Bhutan from October 30 to November 1, 2026, to strengthen bilateral ties. This visit, the first by a Thai Prime Minister to the kingdom in eight years, coincided with the 37th anniversary of diplomatic relations between the two nations.
During discussions with Bhutanese Prime Minister Dasho Tshering Tobgay, the leaders focused on expanding cooperation in public health, renewable energy, agriculture, and tourism. Key priorities included preparations for the Thailand–Bhutan Free Trade Agreement scheduled to take effect on January 1, 2027, and promoting Thai investment in the development of the new city of Gelephu. As part of the visit, the Prime Minister participated in a ceremony for the construction of 108 stupas in Gelephu and visited the Great Buddha Dordenma in Thimphu to highlight shared Buddhist heritage.
