Thailand military service voluntary transition
Overview
The Thai government is transitioning its military service toward a voluntary system through the Volunteer Soldier Project (TOS). Initially announced as a policy to recruit reserve personnel via incentives and career development, the program aims to offer monthly salaries, medical benefits, and life insurance.
By September 2026, the government officially opened recruitment for the 2027 fiscal year, seeking 18,784 male applicants aged 18 to 26. This model replaces the previous ‘online soldier’ project. Under the new terms, volunteers sign four-year contracts and can select from 221 service locations.
To encourage professional military careers, the program provides paths for educational advancement, including quotas for the Army Non-Commissioned Officer School and academic bonuses for civil service exams. Financial incentives include a starting monthly salary of 12,090 baht plus a food allowance of 2,880 baht.
