The Mwananchi Party name change process

Overview

The Muungano Party has officially completed its transition to The Mwananchi Party following a formal process overseen by the Office of the Registrar of Political Parties (ORPP).

Documentation released by Embakasi East MP Babu Owino clarifies that the process began with inquiries regarding the name ‘Linda Mwananchi’ in early August 2026. Following a Gazette Notice on August 28 to solicit public input, the name change was officially effected on September 10, 2026. Although a formal objection was filed by Lawrence Nzunga on August 30, the petitioner withdrew the objection on September 8 after his concerns were addressed.

The Registrar has since certified the change, entering the new name into the official Register. The development has been welcomed by political figures such as Caleb Amisi, leader of the People's Renaissance Movement, who described the transition as a “significant step for Kenya’s multiparty democracy.”
