Theatrical festivals in Sarajevo
Overview
Theatrical festivals in Sarajevo continue to showcase diverse productions, ranging from youth-oriented multimedia arts to heavy contemporary dramas.
The 14th Juventafest International High School Theater Festival officially opened at the Sarajevo Youth Theatre, featuring participants from several Balkan countries. During the opening ceremony, veteran actress Jasna Diklić addressed participants from Serbia, Croatia, Montenegro, and Bosnia and Herzegovina, noting that art serves as a “universal language that fosters tolerance and understanding.” Organized by the ‘Media – Art’ Association, the festival involves over 3,000 members from high school drama groups across more than 15 European countries.
Concurrently, Sarajevo Fest is presenting productions at the National Theatre Sarajevo. As part of the ‘Kultura na ulice!’ project, the theatre is presenting ‘Sarajevo s ljubavlju’, a performance featuring actors Mona Muratović, Merima Lepić Redžepović, Dino Bajrović, and Belma Salkunić. The production reimagines famous songs about the city as dramatic monologues and prose.
Other festival programming includes ‘Smrt u Dubrovniku’ (Death in Dubrovnik), directed by Petar Pejaković, which explores personal and collective memory regarding the 1991 bombardment of Dubrovnik, and ‘Nigdje sam / Desvanecimiento’, a contemporary drama by Polish director Norbert Rakowski examining themes of euthanasia and human dignity.
In addition to the theatrical events, the European Days of Jewish Culture have commenced in Sarajevo. Centered on the theme ‘Love’, this program includes lectures and exhibitions designed to promote intercultural dialogue.
