Theft convictions of employees in Greece

Overview

Recent court rulings in Greece have addressed separate incidents of theft by employees against their employers.

In Thessaloniki, a 36-year-old health center employee was sentenced to 20 months in prison, which may be converted to a fine of 10 euros per day, for stealing approximately 1,000 euros from her supervisor. The theft was discovered after the supervisor marked a 50-euro note and observed the suspect.

In Volos, a 53-year-old cleaning lady was sentenced to 14 months in prison, convertible to a daily fine of 10 euros, plus a 1,000 euro fine. The defendant was caught on security footage stealing from a businessman’s office. While the employer reported total losses of approximately 21,000 euros over five years, the defendant admitted to stealing only about 200 euros from the office.
