Thessaloniki Metro-linked Pontou Road upgrade
Overview
In mid‑2026 the Greek Ministry of Infrastructure and Transport awarded a €24 million contract to Aktor ATE to rebuild the 2.33‑km Pontou Road corridor in the Kalamaria district of Thessaloniki. The project widens the road to a 40‑metre right‑of‑way, adds two traffic lanes per direction, sidewalks, a bicycle lane and a central island, and supports the upcoming Thessaloniki Metro extension, which will include four new stations along the route.
The contract was granted through a negotiated tender without prior publication, with Aktor ATE selected for offering the most economical bid. The works are classified as a national‑level project and are part of the Ministry’s 2026‑2030 Sectoral Development Programme, with a target completion date of 31 December 2028.
In late July, Minister Christos Dimas and Deputy Minister Nikos Tachiaos inspected the site, emphasizing the road’s importance for traffic flow and the metro’s functionality. The municipality confirmed the €24.6 million budget and noted that the upgraded road, along with related traffic nodes and land‑expropriations, is essential for final certification before the metro line can open to the public.
