Thessaloniki Metro technical disruptions

Overview

The Thessaloniki Metro has experienced separate technical disruptions affecting service and station access.

In mid-September, the Agia Sophia station was temporarily closed following a smoke incident caused by the failure of a compensation capacitor in a technical room. The event triggered fire safety systems and a station evacuation.

In early October, a different technical issue involving the data transmission system caused a service interruption lasting approximately two and a half hours. The operator, THEMA S.A., reported that automated systems followed safety protocols to disembark passengers before service was restored following inspections and tests.
