Thessaly agricultural development initiatives

Overview

The Thessaly Region is implementing various strategies to support its agricultural sector. Initially, regional authorities focused on addressing surplus stock for legume producers. Governor Dimitris Kouretas discussed plans to distribute high-quality Greek legumes through institutional channels, such as schools, hospitals, and the Armed Forces, by establishing specific technical specifications for procurement tenders. The region also planned a festival in Larissa to facilitate direct sales from local cooperatives to consumers.

Subsequently, the region expanded its focus toward technological and environmental innovation by joining the European AGRINEXT project. Funded by the Horizon Europe program, this initiative aims to help rural producers adapt to technological and environmental shifts. As one of ten pilot regions, Thessaly will focus on water and climate resilience through precision irrigation, soil health via regenerative practices, and the application of digital skills and artificial intelligence in agriculture.
