Threats and vandalism against Giorgia Meloni in Bologna

Overview

In August 2026, a series of vandalism incidents occurred in Bologna, involving antisemitic graffiti and death threats directed at Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni. One specific piece of graffiti depicted Meloni with a firearm pointed at her head, while other messages included slogans such as “Meloni hanged”.

Police investigators from the DIGOS division identified a 23-year-old French national as a primary suspect. Authorities linked seven French nationals staying in a local apartment to the incidents. While two suspects have returned to France, one remains in Italy. During a search, police seized various personal items, including a mobile phone.

In response to the intimidation and hate speech, members of the Fratelli d'Italia party announced intentions to file formal complaints with the Prosecutor’s Office and Police Department. Party representative Stefano Cavedagna criticized the local environment, describing Bologna as becoming “the most anarchic in Italy”.
