Tierra del Fuego fiscal and financing developments

Overview

Tierra del Fuego is addressing fiscal challenges through both tax reform proposals and national government financing. In early September, the provincial executive branch proposed amending Provincial Law No. 440 to introduce a 1.2% stamp tax on credit card statements. This reform also included increased tax rates for vehicle sales (25%), real estate transfers (20%), and commercial property rentals (15%), while maintaining a 0% rate for residential rentals. The proposal was introduced amid rising household debt and declining consumption in the region.

By late September, the province secured a 45,000 million peso financial advance from the Argentine national government. Signed by Governor Gustavo Melella and the National Secretariat of Finance, the agreement carries a 15% fixed annual nominal interest rate. Repayment is structured through withholdings from federal coparticipation funds. This latest operation marks the seventh such advance provided to the province in 2026. Under the terms of the agreement, the provincial government is required to provide periodic reports on its public finances to national authorities, as the mechanism serves as a short-term financing tool rather than a non-refundable transfer.
