Tierra del Fuego poultry production development

Poultry production in Tierra del Fuego has transitioned from small-scale family initiatives to organized regional efforts aimed at food sovereignty.

Initially, individual producers in Río Grande began small poultry projects, such as a family transitioning from factory work to egg production. These early efforts were supported by the National Institute of Agricultural Technology (INTA) through the Prohuerta program, which provided technical assistance and laying hens to help producers evaluate large-scale management techniques.

Building on these foundations, producers are now working with the provincial Secretariat of Agriculture and INTA to develop a quality seal for local egg production. This initiative seeks to standardize industry criteria through a protocol covering bird conditions and organic waste management. A pilot program is scheduled for a facility in Río Grande to test these processes. Despite these advancements, the sector continues to face logistical hurdles, specifically the need to transport laying hens via air from Buenos Aires and Pergamino, or the difficulty of moving birds from Río Gallegos due to limited air connections or the requirement to cross Chilean territory.
