TİGEM Angus cattle breeding project in Iğdır

Overview

The General Directorate of Agricultural Enterprises (TİGEM) launched an open-pasture Angus cattle breeding project at the Kazım Karabekir Agricultural Enterprise in Iğdır. Modeled after livestock farming in regions such as Uruguay and Texas, the initiative aims to meet Turkey’s red meat requirements. Additionally, the project serves a strategic security function, as the cattle consume shrubby vegetation that can obstruct border security.

Following the initial success of the breeding program, the ‘Abundance in the Countryside, Support for Livestock’ project has transitioned into an active distribution phase. Coordinated by the Ministry of Agriculture and Forestry, the initiative is distributing pregnant Angus livestock to local producers to strengthen rural family businesses.

As of late September 2026, approximately 12,680 animals have been distributed to 840 breeders. The project, which manages various breeds including Limousin, Charolais, and Hereford, is scheduled to continue until the end of 2028 with a long-term goal of reaching 60,000 breeders.
