Tlaxcala political finance scrutiny
Entities: Congress of the State of Tlaxcala · Instituto Tlaxcalteca de Elecciones · Morena · Partido Revolucionario Institucional · Instituto Nacional Electoral
Overview
In early August 2026 the Tlaxcala Electoral Institute (ITE) announced a schedule to retain more than 5.5 million pesos in fines from the Morena, PRI and PAC parties for irregularities found in their 2023‑2024 campaign‑finance reports. The penalties, amounting to three separate deductions, were declared final and binding despite a request from the PRI for suspension.
A few days later the Tlaxcala State Congress began its own fiscal oversight by reviewing the 2025 public accounts of 30 municipalities. It approved most but rejected five municipalities—Atlangatepec, Atltzayanca, Españita, Huamantla and Lázaro Cárdenas—citing low compliance scores and probable patrimonial damages of several million pesos each. The rejection started the congressional review process for the next fiscal year, extending the state's focus on financial accountability across political and municipal bodies.
