Toledo train collision and political response

Overview

A severe high-speed rail collision occurred in Urda, Toledo, involving a Renfe AVE and an Iryo train. The accident, which reportedly caused some carriages to fall down an embankment, resulted in at least 46 deaths and 40 serious injuries. The incident led to the suspension of high-speed rail services between Madrid and Andalusia.

The tragedy triggered significant public and political reactions. Footballer Marcos Llorente criticized Transport Minister Óscar Puente, describing the Minister’s management as a “fucking disaster” and accusing him of prioritizing social media over public safety.

Politically, Alberto Núñez Feijóo, leader of the People's Party, called for an immediate, independent review of the entire Spanish railway network and demanded judicial investigations into infrastructure and safety systems. While the People's Party suspended pre-campaign activities, Vox leader Santiago Abascal blamed the current administration's policies for the accident.
