The series incorporates high‑resolution aerial footage captured by a Ravenna‑based drone crew (Valerio Marado, Gianluca Rovituso, Marco Barberini of IAS – Capturing Reality). Sunrise overflights of the excavation site were integrated into promotional material aired on Good Morning America and other outlets, and the drone team also filmed influencer visits to the site, providing real‑time clips for those broadcasts. Executive producer Kevin R. Wright, also formerly of “Loki”, and Hiddleston’s Ithaca production company partnered with Plimsoll Productions to blend scholarly rigor with cinematic storytelling aimed at a broad, younger audience.

Disney and National Geographic promoted the series jointly, distributing it internationally through Disney+ and affiliated channels. The show challenges the long‑held view that the disaster was instantaneous, highlighting new evidence that many inhabitants survived for hours after the initial eruption. It entered Disney+’s global Top 10, ranked fifth on Portugal’s national viewership charts shortly after release, and was premiered at the British Museum. In a CNN Brasil interview, Hiddleston said the project marks his first experience presenting a story as himself.
