Torreón school attack

Overview

On October 1, 2026, an attack occurred at Secondary School No. 13 in the Ejido La Unión district of Torreón, Coahuila. The assault resulted in the death of the school’s subdirector, Nery Edith Narváez González, and left several others injured, including students and teachers.

Coahuila State Attorney General Federico Fernández Montañez confirmed the arrest of two 18-year-old brothers, who are former students of the institution. While early reports considered the use of firearms or explosives, investigators clarified that the attack was carried out using bladed weapons, specifically machetes. Some reports also suggested the use of improvised explosive devices like firecrackers or petards to cause panic.

Authorities have described the incident as an “isolated attack” occurring within a context of a “disarticulated family,” with preliminary investigations suggesting motives related to personal resentment toward the school. New details indicate the suspects may have had a “fascination with similar attacks in other countries,” potentially influenced by social media content. Additionally, reports suggest that local parents and residents detained the suspects before authorities arrived. The state government has indicated it will seek maximum legal penalties for the suspects and is coordinating with federal intelligence to further investigate the motives.
