Tourism development initiatives in Africa

West African and North African nations are implementing various strategies to bolster their tourism sectors through domestic engagement, digitalization, and cultural connectivity.

Senegal and Mali have launched initiatives to promote domestic tourism. Senegal’s Agence Sénégalaise de Promotion Touristique partnered with Elton Oil Sénégal to highlight the Sine-Saloum destination and eco-friendly accommodations. Meanwhile, Mali designated September as ‘Tourism Month’ under the theme ‘Internal tourism, a vector for promoting the local economy and strengthening patriotism,’ aiming to connect citizens with national heritage and support local artisans and service providers.

Algeria is focusing on the digitalization of its tourism sector to improve administrative efficiency and reduce processing times through dematerialized procedures and a dedicated visa platform. Additionally, efforts are being made to strengthen cultural and spiritual ties between Algeria and Senegal, with travel agencies promoting routes centered on the shared Tidjaniya Sufi tradition and historical sites such as Ain Madhi.
