Toy recalls in Italy due to safety hazards

Overview

The Asl di Teramo initially issued a recall for three non-compliant toys following alerts from the European Safety Gate system. These items included a Yisky Super Piaer Car Spider, which posed an ingestion risk due to an accessible battery compartment, and two Trendhaus products—a Feel Better Buddy Voodoo Magic and a sand-filled carrot-shaped toy—which carried risks of breaking and dispersing asbestos.

Subsequent warnings from Italian health authorities and the National Asbestos Desk focused specifically on the Trendhaus carrot-shaped toy (Model 967176). The toy, an orange elastic item approximately 17 centimeters long, was found to contain tremolite, a form of asbestos. The European Safety Gate system classified the risk as “serious.” Authorities identified approximately 30,024 affected units. The specific product details include Brand: Trendhaus; Model: 967176; Batch: 2025 = CH33287; and Barcode: 4032722967176.

Because specific distributors in Italy have not been identified, officials noted the product may have been purchased through online marketplaces. There is particular concern regarding the toy’s presence in schools, nurseries, and other childcare facilities. In response to the contamination, the Italian Ministry of Health issued an urgent alert. If the toy is intact, users are advised to stop using it immediately, keep it away from children, and avoid opening, cutting, or squeezing it. It should not be disposed of in regular household waste; instead, consumers should contact the seller or local health authorities (ASL/ATS) for proper disposal instructions. If the toy is broken and the sand has escaped, authorities warn against sweeping or using a vacuum cleaner to prevent the dispersal of asbestos fibers. In such cases, the area should be cleared of people and the local health authority should be contacted immediately.
