Traditional medicine fraud investigations in Vietnam
Overview
Authorities in Vietnam have launched criminal investigations into separate groups involved in the fraudulent production and sale of counterfeit traditional medicine via social media.
In Phú Thọ province, police charged 21 individuals, including Nguyễn Tiến Đạt, for “deceiving customers.” The group allegedly used manipulated images of celebrities and exaggerated claims to sell products like “Xương khớp bà Sáu.” Investigators found that products were purchased at low costs and resold at significant markups, with over 5,000 orders processed nationwide between May and July 2026.
In Thanh Hoa province, police prosecuted three individuals—Huỳnh Văn Mẩn, Nguyễn Thị Bích Phương, and Nguyễn Thị Kim Thoa—for “producing and trading counterfeit goods that are medicines.” Operating since 2020, the group used Facebook to market products for arthritis and sinusitis under the fabricated identities of “herbalist Nguyễn Văn Sáu” and “herbalist Đỗ Thái Nam.”
Lacking medical training or production licenses, the suspects mixed modern pharmaceutical ingredients, including paracetamol, dexamethasone, and chlorpheniramine, into herbal materials. Forensic testing confirmed the products contained undisclosed active ingredients and substances on prohibited lists. Authorities seized over one ton of raw materials and approximately 50kg of pharmaceutical powder. The counterfeit products were distributed nationwide via express delivery, and some victims reported that their medical conditions worsened after using the products.
