Overview

In late August 2026, several incidents of traffic violations and hit-and-run accidents were reported across various regions in Japan.

Initial reports from August 23 detailed arrests in Fukuoka City for suspected drunk driving and in Kyoto for dangerous driving that resulted in serious spinal injuries to a passenger. That same day, service on the Kintetsu Kyoto Line was suspended following a personnel accident near Oko Station.

By August 25, police reported further arrests related to hit-and-run incidents. In Kagoshima, a driver was arrested after colliding with a streetcar, admitting he fled because he had been drinking. In Shiga Prefecture, a man was arrested for allegedly striking a pedestrian on a crosswalk, though he denied the allegations. Additionally, a woman in Kyoto Prefecture was arrested for a July collision with a cyclist that resulted in a broken arm.
