Fatal road accidents in Romania and Moldova

Overview

On August 13, several road accidents were reported in Romania and Moldova. Initial reports indicated collisions in Bucharest, Romania, and Chișinău, Moldova, which caused traffic congestion and impacted trolleybus circulation, though no casualties were immediately reported in those specific incidents.

Later reports detailed a series of fatal accidents within Romania. In Brașov, a 50-year-old driver is under investigation for manslaughter and bodily harm after his vehicle mounted a sidewalk, killing a 25-year-old man and a 34-year-old German citizen, and seriously injuring a third person. Investigators are examining whether the driver suffered a medical emergency, specifically epilepsy; the driver claims he lost consciousness, and reports suggest he had discontinued treatment despite known risks.

In Timiș County, a three-car collision on the DN6 resulted in the death of a 62-year-old man and injuries to five others, including a minor. In Mureș, a severe accident in Mihai Viteazu involving three cars and a military truck left three people dead, including a minor, and one person critically injured.

Additional fatalities and injuries were reported in Brăila, where a 55-year-old man performing a dangerous overtaking maneuver on DN2B collided head-on with another vehicle, killing both himself and his 54-year-old wife. On the A1 near Săliște, a collision between a car and a truck trailer sent four people to the hospital. A fatality was also reported on the A0 motorway near Ciorogârla after a car became caught between two heavy goods vehicles.

In a separate incident in Brașov, a 46-year-old man was detained after behaving violently and assaulting medical staff at a hospital.
