Traffic and infrastructure issues in Campobasso

Traffic congestion in the Campobasso region has been driven by various infrastructure issues. Initially, road works on the SS 372 state highway near the Campobasso interchange caused significant delays, with queues reaching up to six kilometres toward Benevento. Local representatives criticized the lack of advance notice and the reliance on automated traffic lights without human oversight.

Later, the situation evolved as the closure of the SS16 highway following a bridge collapse in Montenero di Bisaccia forced an exceptional volume of traffic onto the SP55 provincial road. In response to the SP55 exceeding its design capacity, the President of the Province of Campobasso, Giuseppe Puchetti, announced emergency funding. This includes an initial 150,000 euro intervention in early September for pavement and signage improvements, with an additional 100,000 euros planned by the end of 2026.

Expanding on these infrastructure efforts, the Municipality of Campobasso has approved a separate executive project totaling 500,000 euros. This municipal funding is dedicated to the maintenance of roads and sidewalks within the urban center—specifically targeting via Insorti d’Ungheria and via Garibaldi—as well as various peripheral and rural areas to ensure road safety and operational continuity.

By August 2026, regional development and reconstruction efforts in Campobasso have continued to address long-term needs. The extraordinary commissioner extended the deadline for the 2026 public notice regarding private housing reconstruction following the 2018 earthquakes to September 25, 2026. Concurrently, local authorities continue to manage infrastructure needs, including ongoing road maintenance on the SP55 necessitated by the SS16 closure.
