Traian Băsescu political and economic critiques

Former Romanian President Traian Băsescu has issued several critiques regarding the country’s political, judicial, and economic landscape.

Băsescu initially targeted the UDMR political party, accusing them of maintaining excessive ties to Budapest and exerting undue influence in Bucharest. He dismissed the prospect of a UDMR representative serving as Prime Minister. This prompted a rebuttal from UDMR leader Kelemen Hunor, who characterized Băsescu as a “product of the communist dictatorship.” During this period, Băsescu also expressed concerns over political stability, the national budget, and a “criminal” lack of medical supplies for stroke patients.

Subsequently, Băsescu shifted his focus to the judicial system, expressing regret over the methods used during Laura Codruța Kovesi’s tenure at the DNA. He argued that media leaks and public spectacles surrounding investigations served to discredit the anti-corruption movement.

Regarding the economy, Băsescu warned of potential energy security risks, predicting that international oil prices could exceed $120 per barrel. He suggested Romania seek oil supplies from Kazakhstan to mitigate high gas prices and supply issues from the Gulf, while also calling for a reduction in parliamentary spending.
