Transjakarta management of Thousand Islands transport

Jakarta Governor Pramono Anung announced plans to transfer the management of transportation services between mainland Jakarta and the Thousand Islands (Kepulauan Seribu) from the Jakarta Transportation Agency to PT Transportasi Jakarta (Transjakarta). The transition, intended to improve service quality, punctuality, and equitable access, is expected to begin by June 2027.

The transition process is projected to take approximately one year and will involve strategic studies regarding regulations, operational models, human resources, and financial projections. To optimize service, Transjakarta plans to utilize existing assets such as ships, docks, and port facilities, while potentially upgrading ticketing technology.

Proposed long-term developments include a ‘hub and spoke’ model using large capacity vessels for main routes and smaller feeder boats for inter-island connectivity. While the Jakarta Regional House of Representatives (DPRD) expressed support for the move to ensure safer and more integrated transport, officials have suggested that Transjakarta manage the service directly to avoid the bureaucracy and costs associated with forming a new subsidiary.
