Transnational organized crime in Bolivia
Overview
Bolivian officials have raised alarms regarding the country’s increasing role as an operational hub for transnational criminal organizations. Deputy Carlos Alarcón warned of the expansion of groups such as Mexico’s Jalisco New Generation Cartel, Brazil’s Primeiro Comando da Capital and Comando Vermelho, and criminal networks from Peru and Colombia, noting a rise in contract killings and potential infiltration of state institutions.
In a significant enforcement action, Bolivian authorities extradited Jorge Isaac Campaz Jiménez, known as ‘Mapaya’, to Colombia. Identified as the alleged leader of the ‘Los Espartanos’ organization, Campaz Jiménez was captured in Santa Cruz following an armed confrontation.
The extradition follows criticism from Bolivian government officials, including Minister of Government Marco Antonio Oviedo, regarding the judicial system’s perceived lack of support in combating international organized crime and narcoterrorism.
