Transnordestina railway development in Piauí
Overview
Efforts to expand the Transnordestina railway network in Piauí involve both passenger service proposals and cargo infrastructure development. Governor Rafael Fonteles has proposed the reactivation of passenger rail services on the segment connecting Caxias (MA) to Altos (PI), requesting that the Federal Government include passenger transport in the 2026 contract renewal for Transnordestina Logística. This specific stretch has been inactive for passengers since 1988.
Simultaneously, logistics capacity is being expanded through the construction of the Terminal Intermodal do Piauí (TIPI) in Bela Vista do Piauí. Managed by Transnordestina Logística S.A., the terminal is partially operational and currently handles corn, sorghum, gypsum, and limestone. With an investment of R$ 50 million, the facility is expected to be fully inaugurated in the first half of 2027. The terminal aims to integrate rail and road transport, with future plans to facilitate the export of iron ore, manganese, and copper to the Port of Pecém.
