Transport disruptions in Italy and Albania

Overview

In Albania, the government has announced the indefinite continuation of fuel subsidies for public transport operators to mitigate rising costs. Following initial meetings between transport officials and the ministers of infrastructure and economy, a subsidy of 50 ALL per liter was originally provided for a four-month period from June through September.

Minister of Economy and Innovation Delina Ibrahimaj stated that the decision to extend these subsidies indefinitely was made in consultation with the Ministry of Infrastructure and Energy to ensure the stability of public services. This move follows earlier disruptions where operators implemented a 20% to 30% reduction in vehicle fleets due to high fuel costs and a lack of promised compensations.

Rising fuel prices, driven by conflicts in the Middle East, have significantly increased state revenue. Between March and July, the Albanian budget collected approximately 20.2 billion lek from oil and gasoline imports, a 9.1% increase compared to the previous year. This revenue growth is attributed to higher prices rather than volume, as import volumes decreased by 0.6% during that period.

Separately, Italy continues to face scheduled transportation disruptions for September, including national railway strikes on September 7 and 8, regional maintenance strikes on September 10 and 11, aviation service strikes, and a national air traffic control strike by ENAV on September 30.
