Transport insecurity and fatalities in Mexico

Recent incidents on Mexican highways have highlighted growing insecurity and fatalities within the transport sector.

On September 26, 2026, a grocery-carrying tractor-trailer overturned on the Orizaba-Puebla highway near Esperanza. Following the accident, local residents and motorists reportedly looted the vehicle’s cargo before authorities arrived. In a separate incident nearby, a truck driver died of a heart attack while stuck in the traffic congestion caused by the rollover.

In a related development regarding transport security, the body of José Antonio De la Rosa Zárate, a driver from Orizaba, was discovered in the State of Mexico. He had been missing since September 21 while transporting autotanks. GPS data tracked the vehicle moving toward Ecatepec de Morelos, where the tanks were eventually abandoned.

The National Association of Carriers (ANTAC) has responded to these rising security concerns by criticizing federal government initiatives, specifically the National Guard’s ‘Zero Cargo Theft Plan’ and ‘Balam Strategy.’ ANTAC leadership has warned of potential mobilizations if authorities fail to address the increasing insecurity facing the transport industry.
