Tren Patagónico derailment and infrastructure damage

Overview

In early October 2026, the Tren Patagónico service experienced a derailment on the Viedma–Bariloche route between Sierra Colorada and Los Menucos. The incident, involving a main locomotive and a cargo car, was caused by extreme weather and intense rainfall that washed away a railway embankment.

While 140 passengers were on board during the derailment, no injuries were reported. Following the incident, authorities coordinated bus transportation for passengers.

Repair efforts by the provincial company, supported by the Government of Río Negro, involved re-railing the locomotive and freight car while rebuilding the tracks and embankment. Due to the damage, passenger services were suspended on several dates throughout late October to allow crews to restore safe circulation.
