Trenitalia high-speed rail expansion in Europe

FS Group, via its subsidiary Trenitalia France, has announced a major expansion of its high-speed rail services in Europe. The company placed an order for 19 new high-speed trainsets from Hitachi Rail, valued at approximately €2 billion.

The new fleet is intended to support several routes, including Paris-Lyon, Paris-Marseille, and Paris-Milan. Notably, ten of these units are designated for a planned high-speed service between Paris and London, which is expected to begin operations in 2029. This new service aims to challenge the long-standing monopoly held by Eurostar on the cross-Channel route, marking the first major competition for the Channel Tunnel route since Eurostar’s inception in 1994.

The 19 single-deck trains will feature enhanced amenities, such as updated bistro services and improved Wi-Fi connectivity. To facilitate these operations, a new maintenance facility is being developed at Maisons-Alfort Pompadour near Paris. The expansion is supported by a strategic partnership with the investment firm Certares, which recently committed €300 million to the company. The project is expected to create roughly 2,000 jobs across France, Italy, and the United Kingdom.
