Trenitalia high-speed rail expansion in Europe

Overview

FS Group, through its subsidiary Trenitalia France, is executing a major expansion of its high-speed rail services across Europe. Central to this plan is a €2 billion order for 19 new high-speed trains from Hitachi Rail. Ten of these single-deck units are designated for a new service connecting Paris and London via the Eurotunnel, scheduled to begin operations in 2029. This move introduces the first significant competition to the Eurostar monopoly on the Channel Tunnel route since 1994.

The remaining nine trains will strengthen or replace services on routes including Paris-Lyon, Paris-Marseille, and Paris-Milan. To support these operations, a maintenance facility is being developed at Maisons-Alfort Pompadour near Paris.

In Germany, Trenitalia is continuing high-speed tests with its Frecciarossa fleet to address technical requirements for power supply, braking, and signaling. While long-term goals include connections from Berlin to Naples, daily services between Munich and Italian cities, such as Milan and Rome, are expected to begin as early as summer 2027.
