Tributes for Iago Aspas in Vigo

Overview

Vigo officials have initiated plans to honor Celta de Vigo captain Iago Aspas through stadium renaming and a commemorative monument.

Mayor Abel Caballero announced that the Tribuna stand at Balaídos stadium will be renamed ‘Tribuna Iago Aspas’. The decision, which awaits formal approval from the player and the club, aims to recognize Aspas during his final professional season. The stand is expected to become the stadium’s largest capacity area following future expansions for the 2030 World Cup.

In conjunction with the renaming, a jury has been established to evaluate 19 proposals for a life-sized bronze sculpture of the footballer. The project has a total budget of 295,000 euros, covering the statue, transport, and prize money for the top three designs. The city intends to install the monument between March and April at the corner of the Marcador and Tribuna stands.
