Türksat satellite broadcasting transition

Overview

Turkey migrated 573 television channels and 215 radio stations from the aging Türksat 3A satellite to newer, higher-capacity satellites in the Türksat fleet during the night of August 15-16, 2026. Minister of Transport and Infrastructure Abdulkadir Uraloğlu stated the operation managed nearly 1,000 frequencies and required no changes to existing satellite dishes as the new satellites occupy the same orbital position.

While the transition was intended to be seamless, many users experienced technical issues including black screens, missing channels, or audio problems. The Telecommunications Satellite and Electronic Industrialists and Businessmen Association (TUYAD) noted that the problems were not caused by broadcasting infrastructure or television hardware, but rather by how certain device software processes new frequency information. Specifically, some Samsung and LG Smart TV models struggled to automatically process Türksat Channel Update System (TKGS) data.

In response to user difficulties, particularly among those less familiar with technology, Samsung Electronics Türkiye addressed the backlash on social media. The company stated they are working to ensure a seamless experience and are directing customers to updated installation steps via their official support page.

To resolve these issues, users without TKGS must perform manual network scans using specific transponder frequencies, such as 12380 MHz (Vertical, 27500 SR) or 12423 MHz (Horizontal, 30000 SR). Due to these technical hurdles, many users have sought assistance from private technical services, with providers in Istanbul reportedly charging up to 1,000 TL for frequency adjustments, while rates in other major cities range between 500 and 750 TL.
