TRNC election scheduling and political developments

Overview

Officials in the TRNC have proposed holding both local and general elections on December 6, 2026.

Speaker of the Assembly Ziya Öztürkler noted that the Council of Ministers submitted the proposal and indicated that an extraordinary session of the Assembly would be required in September to finalize the process by October 10. During his announcement, Öztürkler also addressed tensions regarding the Cyprus problem and political pressure from South Cyprus.

Finance Minister Dr. Özdemir Berova confirmed the plan to hold both election types on the same date to foster political stability through 2030. Berova mentioned that the government is considering legal changes to shorten the current two-month election ban period, subject to consultations with the opposition.
