Tunisian activist detention and protests

Overview

In Tunis, hundreds of protesters gathered to demand the release of four activists associated with the Global Sumud Flotilla (also referred to as the Resilience Fleet). The detainees—Wael Naouar, Ghassen Henchiri, Ghassen Boughdiri, and Nabil Channoufi—have been held since March under investigation for alleged financial irregularities and money laundering related to humanitarian fundraising. A court recently extended their pre-trial detention by four months.

The situation escalated as supporters raised concerns regarding the detainees’ health, noting that Wael Naouar had been on an open-ended hunger strike since mid-August. Human rights organizations and legal teams have denied all allegations of misconduct, characterizing the detainees as “prisoners of conscience” in a politically motivated crackdown.

Following a large-scale march in Tunis, Tunisian authorities arrested more than 15 individuals, including march participants and members of the support committee. Political groups, such as the Labor Party and the Popular Current, condemned these arrests as a repressive escalation against those supporting Palestinian rights.
