Turimiquire water system restoration in Venezuela

Overview

The Turimiquire water transfer system, which supplies Margarita Island and Sucre state, has undergone a partial restoration following a prolonged disruption. The water emergency, which lasted approximately six to seven months, was initially triggered by a rockslide following a 5.2 magnitude earthquake that obstructed 82% of a critical pipeline.

Governor Marisel Velásquez announced the reactivation of water pumping from the Turimiquire reservoir in Sucre. The restoration process involved pipe pressurization and purging efforts, with service returning progressively to municipalities including Tubores, Díaz, Marcano, García, and Gómez.

While residents in sectors such as La Guardia have seen the return of piped water, the supply remains irregular. Local authorities and residents continue to face uncertainty regarding the long-term stability of the system due to previous infrastructure failures.
