Turkey adult literacy mobilization efforts
Overview
Since the launch of the Literacy Mobilization directive in February 2018, Turkey has implemented adult education initiatives aimed at providing literacy skills, basic arithmetic, and citizenship knowledge. Under the patronage of President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan and Emine Erdoğan, the program guides citizens toward second-level adult literacy courses to reach primary school education levels.
Data from the Ministry of National Education shows that approximately 1.96 million people have participated in these courses since 2018, with 1.017 million successfully completing them and receiving certification. A significant portion of these participants are women, with 471,734 women having learned to read and write through the program. In the most recent year reported, 141,529 participants joined the courses, including 100,003 women.
