Turkey capital market concentration

Overview

In late July 2026, data from the Turkish Capital Markets Association showed that domestic investors’ total financial assets had risen to roughly 49.7 trillion lira, a 12.4 % year‑on‑year increase, with equity holdings expanding sharply. Istanbul emerged as the dominant hub, hosting the largest number of investors and the biggest portfolio values, while foreign investors from the United States, Qatar, the United Kingdom and Germany also held sizable positions.

A week later, a Member of Parliament highlighted that a very small group of about 30,000 large shareholders now controls roughly 80 % of the market’s total value on Borsa Istanbul. Although retail participation had grown to 6.7 million investors, these large holders—each with portfolios of at least 10 million TL—account for a disproportionate share of wealth. The MP criticised recent IPO pricing and accused regulators of neglect, framing the situation as an “open robbery” that threatens confidence in Turkey’s capital market.
