Turkey earthquake reconstruction housing
Entities: Hayati Yazıcı · Mehmet Öntürk · Fatma Şahin · Gaziantep · Mesut Şahin
Overview
In early August 2026 Turkey’s Ministry of Environment, Urbanisation and Climate Change completed a large disaster‑relief housing project in the İslahiye district of Gaziantep, delivering 31,053 independent units—including 25,237 homes, 4,463 village houses and 1,353 workplaces—for families displaced by the February 2023 earthquakes. Across 11 provinces the nationwide rebuilding programme has produced over 455,000 housing units.
A few days later the Gaziantep Metropolitan Municipality handed over keys and title deeds for 1,000 newly finished apartments in the Kuzeyşehir and Güneyşehir complexes. Mayor Fatma Şahin and AK Party Deputy Chairman Hayati Yazıcı presented the units, and a lottery was held to allocate another 1,000 homes. The municipality’s housing subsidiary Gazikonut also marked the foundation‑laying for the first stage of the 5,000‑unit Bahçelievler project, part of a broader 20,000‑unit plan to meet post‑earthquake demand.
On 7 August 2026 the same hand‑over ceremony in Gaziantep was repeated, and the lottery for the additional 1,000 units was confirmed. In Hatay, the Ministry of Environment, Urbanisation and Climate Change conducted a “Home Owner Turkey” lottery that assigned 8,500 social‑housing units to eligible families as part of the second phase of the President’s “Century‑long Housing Project,” with delivery slated for October 2026. The event also included the handover of a new market complex in Antakya’s historic Arasta district. Separately, the government released updated construction‑cost tables that will be used to calculate property taxes for 2027, affecting millions of Turkish homeowners.
