Turkey Eurofighter Typhoon procurement process

Overview

Turkey is advancing its procurement of the Eurofighter Typhoon through technical inspections and personnel training in the United Kingdom. Initially, a delegation of Turkish defense experts visited RAF Coningsby to evaluate maintenance, sustainment processes, and technical infrastructure compatibility to ensure integration with Turkish practices.

The project has now reached an operational milestone with the arrival of the first two experienced combat pilots from the Turkish Air Force at RAF Coningsby. These pilots have joined the Royal Air Force’s 29 Squadron, the operational conversion unit, to begin transition training.

The training program is expected to last approximately one year, consisting of a nine-month phase focused on aircraft systems, maintenance, and operational procedures, followed by a three-month instructor training period. Upon completion, these pilots will remain with the British unit to serve as instructors until Turkey receives its first new aircraft, which is projected for 2030.

This initiative is part of a broader defense agreement valued at over £8 billion for the acquisition of 20 aircraft, weaponry, and support services. The program includes training for approximately ten pilots and nearly one hundred maintenance technicians specializing in mechanics, avionics, and mission systems, aiming to enhance Turkey’s aerial combat capabilities and strengthen interoperability with NATO allies.
