Turkey GEKİS digital livestock tracking implementation

Overview

Turkey’s Ministry of Agriculture and Forestry has launched the Secure Electronic Ear Tag Monitoring System (GEKİS) to digitize livestock tracking. Developed in collaboration with the Presidency of Defense Industries and utilizing domestic resources from ASEL SAN, the system replaces traditional plastic ear tags with electronic identifiers.

The initiative aims to monitor the entire lifecycle of cattle—including birth, vaccinations, health records, movements, and sales—to increase state oversight and manage disease outbreaks. The project targets over 17 million cattle, representing an economic value exceeding 1.5 trillion lira.

Following the initial launch, technical training for the system has commenced in Kars for personnel from the Provincial Directorate of Agriculture and Forestry to prepare for field implementation.
