Turkey-Israel diplomatic tensions

Overview

Diplomatic tensions between Turkey and Israel have escalated following comments and actions by Turkish Foreign Minister Hakan Fidan.

Following a visit to Kyiv, Fidan drew criticism regarding the contrast between Turkey’s diplomatic visibility in Ukraine and its stance on the Gaza conflict, noting that while Russia is present in Kyiv, Israel is present in Gaza.

Relations further deteriorated after Fidan appeared near a map depicting the total erasure of Israel. In response, the Israeli Ministry of Foreign Affairs issued a sharp rebuke, asserting that Turkey cannot alter Gaza’s security conditions and accusing the country of acting as a “headquarters for Hamas” by providing sanctuary to the group’s leaders. Israel maintained that regional progress requires the disarmament of Hamas and the demilitarization of Gaza.
