Turkey-Japan defense and diplomatic cooperation

Overview

Turkey and Japan have moved to deepen their bilateral relations through expanded defense and diplomatic cooperation.

Turkish Defense Minister Yaşar Güler emphasized the need for increased dialogue in response to a “complex global security environment and emerging technological risks.” He expressed interest in integrating Japan’s advanced technology and engineering with Turkey’s production capacity and field experience, specifically through military training, joint exercises, and defense industry collaboration.

Following these defense discussions, Turkish Vice President Cevdet Yılmaz held further diplomatic meetings with the Japanese ambassador. These talks expanded the scope of cooperation to include energy, tourism, science, technology, and collaboration in third countries.

Building on these diplomatic efforts, Vice President Yılmaz has continued engaging with various international representatives, including the Japanese ambassador, to discuss bilateral trade, energy, and regional stability. This occurs amid broader Turkish economic objectives, such as a goal to reach 450 billion dollars in total goods and services exports by 2029.
