Turkish domestic security and public safety measures
Overview
Turkish Interior Minister Mustafa Çiftçi has addressed various aspects of national security and public safety. Initially, the Minister warned of the security threats posed by digital disinformation, stating that rapidly spreading false content can undermine social peace and national unity. He asserted that the Ministry of Interior intends to “respond to the speed of lies with the power of truth.”
Regarding physical security, Çiftçi highlighted a protocol signed with the Ministry of National Education to enhance school safety, supported by the deployment of 31,000 ‘Garden Officers’. On firearm safety, he emphasized that the responsibility for securing household weapons lies with families, urging parents to use steel safes or locked cabinets to prevent children from accessing them. He also reported that since February 10, 64,372 firearms have been seized and 68,310 individuals processed.
Çiftçi has noted a decrease in crimes against persons, with figures dropping from an average of 282,348 between 2021 and 2025 to 243,000 since his tenure began.
In a recent security summit, the Minister outlined a shift toward a “preventive security model” that integrates intelligence, technology, and data analysis to identify risks before crimes occur. Strategic objectives include increasing joint operations between narcotics, traffic, and intelligence units to combat new-generation crime gangs, implementing province-based planning to capture wanted individuals, and targeting the distribution chains of unlicensed firearms. He specifically noted that there will be “no gaps in the fight against violence against women.”
