Turkish domestic smartphone development project

Overview

Aselsan and Türk Telekom are collaborating on a domestic smartphone project intended to reduce Turkey’s reliance on foreign communication technologies. The project, coordinated by TTT İnovasyon, aims for a market release in the first half of 2027.

The development follows a three-year roadmap: the initial phase will utilize the Android operating system, followed by a transition to a domestic operating system in the second year, and the integration of domestic chip technology in the third. The product lineup is expected to include premium, upper-segment, and mid-range models. One specific model is being designed for public employees with encrypted communication features, and all models are planned to include satellite connectivity for use during natural disasters.

Aselsan is responsible for hardware engineering and manufacturing, while Türk Telekom will manage software, marketing, and distribution. While there are differing reports regarding the manufacturing location, Türk Telekom CEO Ebubekir Şahin indicated that production and testing processes are currently ongoing in Malatya. The final brand name for the devices will be selected from five proposals submitted to President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan.
