Turkish historical site preservation and restoration

Overview

Turkish municipalities are implementing various projects to preserve historical sites and enhance urban landscapes to support tourism and local heritage.

In Bursa, a cooperation protocol was established for the UNESCO World Heritage site of Cumalıkızık. The initiative involves the Yıldırım Municipality, the Yıldırım District Governor’s Office, and a local agricultural cooperative. The plan focuses on infrastructure upgrades, including a new marketplace and parking facilities, to manage tourism and eliminate irregular sales areas while maintaining the village’s traditional identity.

In other regions, municipalities in Trabzon and Şanlıurfa have launched significant restoration efforts. Trabzon’s Metropolitan Municipality has contracted work to restore, landscape, and light the Pazarkapı Neighborhood Castle Walls using traditional masonry. Meanwhile, in Şanlıurfa, a collaborative project has completed the renovation and illumination of 275 streets in the Old Urfa district, utilizing historic-style paving and repainted walls to bolster the area’s architectural character.
